May 8, 2010 – Day One

We finally got out of Oceanside at 9:30am, about three hours later than I really wanted to, but we still had a bunch of stuff to load in the trailer. We loaded up the dogs, Molly and Coco, said goodbye to our neighbor Marlene, who was keeping an eye out on our home, and we took off on our “Odyssey 2010”. We were headed to Tucson AZ to rendezvous with Paul and Deb Cervone who did leave at 6:30am to visit his mom and dad and sister and brother-in-law who live in Oracle.

The trip was fairly uneventful, we had lunch at an In-and-Out Burger in El Centro, only to discover that we drove through a 5.0 earthquake just a few miles from the highway! I don’t think we specifically felt it, since anything like that may have felt like just a rough patch on the road. Whew!

While we were inside the In-and-Out ordering our last favorite cheeseburgers, we left the dogs in the trailer thinking that they could not get into any trouble. Wrong. Just for this trip I bought a pink and a purple halter to each of the dogs. These were supposed to be easy to put on, but I think we may not have attended the right class for this, but they do look chic in those loud colors. When we returned to the trailer, Marianne came to the erroneous realization that she didn’t put Molly’s halter on correctly. On closer inspection I discovered that one of the two criminals had chewed right through the pretty and expensive accessory in less than ten minutes. It now has duct tape around it – so much for chic!

Our first fuel stop was just east of Yuma, where diesel was only $2.95/gallon, about $0.25 less than it was in Oceanside. I liked that.

We made it to Oracle at dusk and stayed in the cul de sac in front of Paul’s sister and parent’s homes. That evening we enjoyed lounging by their pool, Marianne got in, but I smoked a cigar with Paul on the eve of his 60th birthday. It was like staying at a high class resort! Sweet!

We drove 450 miles in about nine hours. That’s about as long as I feel comfortable in driving. On previous trips we have driven up to 700 miles in a single day, but that’s pushing every one and every thing’s limits.
